Behaviour Support
Specialist Behaviour Support
We work with participants, families, support providers and other members of the support team to understand behaviours of concern, develop practical strategies and support those strategies in everyday settings.
Person-centred practice
Understanding behaviour in context
We consider behaviour alongside communication, environment, routines, relationships, support needs and quality of life. The goal is to develop practical strategies that make sense in the participant’s everyday settings.

What is Behaviour Support?
Behaviour Support is used when a participant experiences behaviours that may affect safety, wellbeing, relationships, participation or quality of life. We look at the behaviour in context, including what is happening around the person, what the behaviour may be communicating or achieving, and whether changes to the environment, support approach or skills could reduce the need for the behaviour.
Functional Behaviour Assessment
A Functional Behaviour Assessment helps us understand the behaviour and the circumstances in which it occurs.
- Meet with the participant and people who know them
- Review relevant records and incident information
- Observe the participant where appropriate
- Identify patterns, contributing factors and possible functions
- Identify environmental and support needs
Behaviour Support Plans
Depending on the participant’s circumstances, this may include an interim Behaviour Support Plan followed by a comprehensive Behaviour Support Plan. Plans are written to be understandable and usable by the people supporting the participant.
Restrictive Practices
Where regulated restrictive practices are involved, NWSS undertakes Behaviour Support work within the relevant NDIS Behaviour Support and restrictive practice requirements. This may include assessment, planning, consultation, monitoring, review and strategies intended to reduce and eliminate restrictive practices where possible.
Implementation support
Writing a Behaviour Support Plan is only part of the work. We help the people around the participant understand the plan and use the strategies consistently in everyday settings.
Training and capacity building
Where required, NWSS can provide participant-specific training to the people responsible for implementing the Behaviour Support Plan.
Monitoring and review
We review information such as incident records, observations, feedback from the participant and support team, implementation progress and changes in behaviour. Strategies and plans can then be updated where required.
